Tsvetan Dobrev graduated from the State Academy of Music majoring in Composition under Professor Alexander Tanev, Piano under Professor Konstantin Ganev and Organ under Professor Neva Krysteva. He taught Polyphony at the State Academy of Music. He specialised in Pisa (Italy) under Professor Pietro Grossi. Since 1990 he has lived and worked in France as musicologist and lecturer.
He wrote chamber, ballet, film music, etc. He was among the first composers in Bulgaria to focus on electroacoustic music. In 1992 he won the Grand Prix at the World Competition for Electroacoustic and Digital Music in Varese (Italy) for the multimedia Metamorphoses. The work reproduces in sound and space the images in the modernist pictures of Hristo Simeonov. It is still included in programs of prestigious festivals such as the festival in Bourges (France) or the Elektrokomplex Festival in Vienna, as well in radio programmes, etc. The multimedia was also included in the Italian Anthology of Electronic Music issued in 2000. In 1991 he became a laureate of the 17th Antibes-France Competition. His works were performed in Japan, Germany, France, Bulgaria and Italy. Piccola La Scala in Milan staged his ballet Marionettes.
